St. James’s Hospital is a national centre of excellence for the care of patients with oesophageal cancer. Oesophageal surgery which involves removal of a portion of the food-pipe is one of the main treatments for oesophageal cancer; however, the surgery is associated with a high risk of lung complications.
The aim of PREPARE trial is to determine if respiratory training before surgery helps patients recover more quickly by reducing the number and duration of respiratory complications experienced after the surgery. Patients entering into this study are assessed in the CRF and trained to use a device that strengthens respiratory muscles. They are then followed up post-surgery to evaluate the extent of post-surgical respiratory complications.
This study is being conducted in collaboration with the University of Utrecht and up to 80 St. James’s Hospital patients are expected to be recruited over the next 2 years. St. James’s hospital is one of eight centres across Europe recruiting participants for this trial.
