Cancer Week 2015 3.jpgPatients and members of the public visited the Clinical Research Facility at St. James’s Hospital on the 16th September for a showcase of cancer research activities being underdertaken across the St. James’s Campus.  In the morning visitors attended a talk by Eihbhlin Mulroe, Chief Executive of ICORG who spoke about how her organisation works with patients, clinicians and industry to bring novel cancer clinical trials to Irish patients.

This was followed by a talk from a survivor of breast cancer who openly shared her experience as a patient on the journey from diagnosis through treatment to recovery.

Attendees were then shown around the Wellcome Trust - HRB Clinical Research Facility in St. James’s Hospital were they met teams of cancer TCD and St. James’s based cancer researchers working in the fields of Radiation Therapy, Breast Cancer, Oesophageal Cancer, Gynaecological Cancers, Lung Cancer, Blood Cancers, Prostate Cancer and investigators exploring exercise interventions in cancer patients.

The Irish Cancer Society and Trinity College Dublin have once again teamed up to hold Cancer Week Ireland – a programme of events highlighting how more people are surviving cancer and how clinical trials and research are making a real difference.   Now entering its second year, Cancer Week Ireland runs from 14th to 20th of September and will this year focus on cancer research and clinical trials, as well as issues around survivorship.  The St. James’s Hospital site treats approximately 60% of adult cancer patients in Ireland and plays a leading role in the conduct of cancer clinical trials involving Irish patients.
